College Week 2011

NUI Galway College Week takes place 28th Feb- 4th March.
This year we will be raising money for Ability West and the Alan Kerins Projects.

Sunday 27th February


Sponsored Croagh Patrick Climb

Raise a minimum of €50 to participate.

Sign up in the Students' Union and collect your membership card.

Itinerary:
Registration at the Archway by the Quad, university Rd. at 9:30am
Buses leave 10am sharp.
Arrive Croagh Patrick 11:30am and sign in to start the climb.
Finish climb at 2:30m/when the last climber signs out.
Bus back to NUI Galway 3pm arriving in at 4:30pm approx.
After Party at 9pm
Equipment Required:
Good walking boots/shoes
Lots of layers as it gets very cold at the top.
Raingear.
Water and snacks.
Remember!! The College Week Croagh Patrick Climb is a fun event open to all students of all capabilities.


90's Night in the College Bar

Tickets are only €2.99 with 90's cover band extraordinaire Smash Hits, a DJ and a free refreshment for everyone along with prizes for the best/worst 90'2 outfits. Over 18's ID required

PhD in a Box

OUr Postgrad Officer, Ciara, has agreed to live in a box for College Week to try and get her PhD written whilst raising money for charity and entertaining you. She is nuts but that's why we love her. watch as we lock her in a box outside Áras na Mac Léinn and see if she lasts until her coming out party on Thursday!

Yes it's that time honoured dance of weddings and debs up and down the country where everyone sits on the floor, with their legs akimbo swaying back and forth and side to side to the sounds of that classic number "Rock the Boat". The current world record stands at 820 participants and we are confident that the students of NUI Galway can easily beat this record whilst raising money for charity. registration from 12pm for the record attempt at 1pm in the Sports Hall at the Kingfisher Sports Centre.

DJ Byrno spins the decks in the College bar from 3pm onwards.

UV5 are one of Ireland's premier high energy party bands. Comprising of five accomplished musicians, the band covers hit tracks from various eras, genres and artists including everything from Kings of Leon to The Killers, Lady Gaga to The Script, and Black Eyed Peas to Bon Jovi. The band play favourites from the '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s right through to the most up to date chart topping hits.

Mini Triathlon
Time: 10am - 3pm

Starting point: Student Sports Centre
Registration Fee: €25

Are you tough enough?

5km Run, 10km Cycle, 500m Swim (20 lengths of the Kingfisher Pool)
10am start at the Student Sports Centre

Sign up in the Students' Union, Sports Centre and Smokey's

Raise €25 (minimum) to enter
Entry includes a free t-shirt and dinner!

Itinerary:
Registration at Student Sports Centre @ 10am Tuesday 1st March
1. The 5km Run/Jog/Walk through Dangan View Map
2. The 10km Cycle along the N59 View Map
3. The 500m Swim (20 lengths) will take place in the Sports Centre pool.

Equipment Required:
1.Run:Running gear, runners, etc.
2. Cycle: Bcycle of any type and helmet. No Helmet = No Race
3. Swim: Swimming Gear, Flip Flops, Swimming Hat, goggles, towel etc.
Remember!! The College Week triathlon is a fun event open to all student of all capabilities.

Witless 2011 kicked off on Tuesday 1st February. Over the course of 3 heats, acts were looking to secure a place in the Witless Final which will take place on the Tuesday of College Week (1st March).

Over the years, the WITLESS band competition has given many bands a great start. The competition and venue offers bands a real experience of the adrenalin rush and pressure of playing live. For the audiences, WITLESS offer us the chance to enjoy the very best of the many students bands in Galway.

5 A Side Soccer Competition
Time: 12pm - 3pm

Venue: Sports Hall, Student Sports Centre
Cost: €40 per team

Tournament Rules

  • You can have a maximum of 7 players in your squad.
  • There are 4 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper permitted on the playing field at any one time. Rolling subs are permitted.
  • Games are 9 minutes in duration
  • The top team from each group and the two best runners up will advance to the knockout stages of the competition.
  • You can score from anywhere on the pitch
  • When the ball goes out of play it must be played back in via a kick in. You cannot score directly from a kick in.
  • A Goalkeeper may leave his/her area
  • A Goalkeeper may not pick up a back-pass. Infringement of this rule will result in an indirect free kick from the edge of the box.
  • There are no Goal Kicks. A Goalkeeper must throw the ball back into play and must throw it to a player in his/her own half. If it is thrown directly into the oppositions half an indirect free-kick is awarded to the opposition from the half way line.
  • Slide tackling is not permitted under any circumstances. If a player persists in slide tacking it will result in a yellow card.
  • If a player picks up a yellow card they are suspended for the remainder of that game. A substitute player is allowed to take their place.
  • If a player picks up a red card they are suspended for the rest of the tournament. A substitute is not permitted to take their place for the remainder of the match they were sent off in. Red Cards will only be issued for serious misconduct.
  • Teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.
  • In the event that teams are level on points in the group stages standings will be decided by Goal difference, goals scored and then the result between the two teams. If teams still cannot be separated there will be a penalty shoot out to determine who advances, with each team having 3 penalties each.
  • In the knockout stages there is no extra time, if teams are level after 9 minutes the winner will be decided by a 3 penalty shoot-out.

Registration fee: €10

You must raise €440 to jump

The Skydive will be the key fundraising event during this years College Week and will be held on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of March (weather permitting). We are aiming to raise over €12,000 from this event alone for the College Week Charities which together with the money raised from all the other fundraising events should ensure we smash all previous years records.
