Student Complaint Procedure

NUI Galway has an official and detailed Student Complaint Procedure.

For information on how the procedure works, view the Student Complaints Procedure
If you need more advice on the procedure, contact the Vice-President/Education Officer in the Students' Union offices or email him/her on su.education@nuigalway.ie

As in life, in university you have both rights and responsibilities. The Student Code of Conduct is available here, and all students are obliged to take heed of it.

Importantly, if you are fined or brought up by the university on Discipline Committee for misbehaviour, you are entitled to have a Students' Union officer represent and advise you at the meeting.

For issues such as bullying and harassment and sexual harassment, there is specific information detailed here

If you are a class rep and have a complaint about a lecturer, whether it's teaching standards, attitude or whatever else, contact the Education Officer and he/she will advise you on the best course of action. It is not recommended to go emailing Head of School or Deans or go passing around petitions if you have a problem with a lecturer. You are recommended to contact the Education Officer before doing any of these things.

If you have a complaint about an exam, you can contact the Education Officer for advice. If you feel your exam result was unfair, check out the Examinations Office's website for information on re-checks (€25) and appeals (€60), which can in some cases improve your result.

View Re-checks/Appeals Info

If you were affected by family or personal illness, bereavement of family or friends, or other extenuating circumstances which you believe adversely affected your exam results, an exam appeal might be a good option for you. Again, contact the Education Officer for information first.
