New peer support scheme for 1st year Engineers
Céim is a collaborative approach to learning and settling in to university life. 1st year students meet weekly for an hour to learn from each other under the guidance of trained 2nd year Student Leaders, with input from academic staff. It's about working in small groups to gain a greater understanding of coursework, develop new skills and become successful higher education learners - it's not about teaching and it's not like a lecture or a tutorial.
Céim is a form of academic peer support, better known as Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) or Peer Assisted Learning (PAL). It derives from the American 'Supplemental Instruction' (SI) model devised in 1973, and today can be found at 1,500 universities and colleges in 29 countries. PASS/PAL/SI delivers proven benefits for students, Student Leaders and third level institutions. Céim is being piloted in the College of Engineering & Informatics at NUI Galway in 2013-2014 and is a joint initiative of the College of Engineering & Informatics and NUI Galway Students' Union.
